TechCrunch & F***edCompany

Filed under: Blogs, Corporate blogs, Interesting, Reference — Rohit Aggarwal @ 9:47 pm

This is an interesting news: TechCrunch (TC) acquired F***edCompany (FC). TC is surely the biggest information gatekeeper about startups.

TC explains the reasons behind this acquisition and to me the crux is:

At its peak, FC had 4 million unique monthly visitors. Since FC focuses on the negative news coming out of startups, and TechCrunch tends to focus on the positive, this combination may seem odd. But the sites are in fact extremely complimentary. For example, the audiences are about equal in size and have very little overlap. So from day one we will double our reach and traffic.

Importance of negative blogging

Filed under: Blogs, Corporate blogs — Rohit Aggarwal @ 4:39 pm

How many times have you seen a CEO of company such as Sun admitting to a failure that is pointed out by a small start-up developer?

Jonathan Schwartz, CEO of Sun, is surely one such example. He writes the following in one of his posts:

“And before you send me the email, yes, I saw the entry written by Matt Mullenweg - and all I can say is… I’m really sorry, Matt. That’s not the way Startup Essentials is supposed to work. We screwed up, and you’re completely right to suggest if that’s the norm, we should kiss goodbye our aspirations of reestablishing our business in the startup community.

If there’s anything I can do to win a second chance, I’d like to know….”

Now, I ask you a question- Why does he need to give importance to this issue or admit this mistake?

I will try to explain the answer from two perspectives- Marketing, and Cognitive Psychology

Marketing:

The answer is ‘credibility’. Now in the next post if Jonathan claims that Sun’s product A is better than that of competition, a reader is more likely to believe him. Glen Urban has coined term ‘Customer Advocacy’ for this behavior. According to his research, if a recommender besides telling the positive aspects of the product, also admits to the downsides of the product, then customers may find such recommender more credible and trust-worthy. Eventually, the customers are more likely to buy the product and are more likely to talk about their experience to their friends, i.e. may generate more word-of-mouth (WOM) about product.

Cognitive-psychology:

Readers may not expect Jonathan to admit such failure of Sun. Therefore, according to Information Processing Theory this post may catch more attention of the readers and hence, the readers are more likely to spread a word about his blog.

The above two perspectives and common wisdom suggests that more readers may flock to Jonathan’s blog due to such post and in the process these readers may read other posts also. Since majority of other posts are in favor of Sun, readers may form overall positive opinion about Sun.

Hence, such a negative post may generate more positive WOM for Sun. This is what I studied in my paper- “Blogs, Bloggers and the Firm: An Analysis of Firm Policies“.

Filed under: Corporate blogs — Rohit Aggarwal @ 2:10 pm

Live Search blog has the details:

Microsoft, Google, Yahoo! Unite to Support Sitemaps  —  Today, we are excited to announce that Google, Microsoft and Yahoo! are coming together in support of the SiteMaps protocol.  The goal of this effort is to improve search results for customers around the world.

See what Danny Sullivan of Search Engine watch has to say:

Search Engines Unite On Unified Sitemaps System  —  In alphabetical order, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo have agreed to all support a unified system of submitting web pages through feeds to their crawlers.  Called Sitemaps, taking its name from the precursor system that Google launched last year …”

By the way, a word to Danny- I like what he writes, but his blog looks cluttered (No offense intended).

 Yahoo! Search blog says:

Yahoo, Google and Microsoft join forces (really !!) behind Sitemaps  —  The best part about to-do lists is when you get to cross something off, and today we can cross one more from the list of feedback we have collected from webmasters.  You have asked us to support a single format for submission …  ”

TechCrunch says:

Google, Yahoo and Microsoft Agree to Standard Sitemaps Protocol  —  In an encouraging act of collaboration, Google, Yahoo and Microsoft announced tonight that they will all begin using the same Sitemaps protocol to index sites around the web.  Now based at Sitemaps.org …

Filed under: Corporate blogs, Interesting — Rohit Aggarwal @ 11:11 pm

Microsoft Max team made the following announcement: “With this release, we’re excited to give you the ability to add RSS and ATOM feeds to Max for viewing in our attractive newspaper layouts.
We’ve also updated Max to support the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 RC1, meaning you can run the latest version with Max. ”

ZDNet blog  has a lot of good word for this product: “Microsoft did a great job here, and the MAX team should be very proud. It is very clear that there is a renewed focus on experience within the company, and this is a good showcase of how WPF can enhance that experience.”

Vista - Protected HD content support

Filed under: Corporate blogs — Rohit Aggarwal @ 1:52 pm

There were some speculations regarding Vista’s support for protected HD content.

Windows Vista blog clarified it and refutes the speculations.

This again shows the importance of having corporate blogs. Now how it works in comparison to press releases, that is the natural question to study.
